I'm thinking of adopting a kitten. Any cat advice?

I love all animals, especially dogs, and if I could have one at my apartment, I would. The manager says only cats are allowed here... and I've always thought that cats were adorable, but I don't know too much about them. So I'm looking to adopt a kitten (less than a year old) soon from the local shelter. Preferably from cat owners... what is some useful advice about owning a cat? Especially in terms of preventing it from shedding all over the place... scratching my expensive sofa and mattress... and choosing the best litter brand (so his/her poop won't be so smelly in my small apartment). Also, how much do you typically spend in cat food/cat expenses in a month? Thanks in advance!

My advice is to make sure you have enough money to get the routine vaccinations, spaying/neutering, and also the yearly vet checks which includes a rabies vaccination. Once those expenses are out of the way, the food, kitty litter, and toys aren't that much.
