I've had my gerbil for 2 and a half years. I did have 2 gerbils but one died a few days ago due cancerous tumours. My other gerbil has lost wieght as is very thin due to a teeth problem. I took him too the vet many times and he has had his lower teeth cut. Hopefully now the other gerbil has gone he will put on a little bit more wieght if i make sure he can eat soft foods. He has not been the same gerbil i know though. He sleeps too much during the day and night. When waking and feeding him up in the morning i find one of his eyes are stuck at in the middle with gunk. And he stands there a looks like hes almost got mini hick-ups. All he does is get up and eat then goes back to bed. No gnawing, (even though i know he can gnaw because his two front teeth haven't grown back yet) no digging, no making his bed, no running on the wheel. And my room is so quiet, you used to hear them running about and chewing. When watching him in the cage and letting him run about on my bed i have noticed that he keeps on itching and scratching with his back legs. I've checked his fur and skin for bald patches and I couldn't find any. Could my gerbil be suffering from depression or is all the sleeping in the day due to old age? And has he got mites or maybe a skin problem that makes him itch?
