IMing on the go? Can you do it without a cell phone?

I was thinking about getting something that lets me IM on the go... Something cheap and thats all I want to use it for. My mom has a blackberry storm and I was wondering... If I bought one without out service could I still you AIM on it? or is there anything else that I could do that with? and if I can I would like to have a phone with a virtual QWERTY keyboard or a real one...
