In CA LAW ~ is it ok to record someone in person as they are speaking (outdoors)?

Lets say...im in "Adams" front yard....and I am talking to him...can I legally record him without his consent? An attorney of mine told me years ago that you can record someone (CA LAW) if you are in public...but...does "outside front yard" count?? What are the specifics of public/etc? Thanks =)

Also...I was hoping to use it in court, if legal....
