In NC how long do they wait to put a dog that was picked up down?

each shelter has their own policy.. however by law, there is a minimum 72 hour stray hold.

Some shelters automatically euthanize as soon as that 72 hours is over... some may evaluate the dogs, and choose the less-adoptable dogs to euthanize first, and some my only euthanize when necessary for space.

Depends on the shelter. If a shelter is full, they may put the dog down the same day it came in. Sometimes the dog may get 3 days. Some shelters will wait weeks... or even months. You'll have to keep in contact with the shelter if you want to keep current on a certain dog.

It depends on the specific shelter. Some do not put down adoptable animals, some will euthanize for space concerns as soon as the 'hold' period is up. Hold periods vary greatly depending on the city and county laws, and can range from 48 hours to a couple of weeks. The only way to know what the hold period is at your local animal control and whether or not they euthanize at the end of it is to contact them directly and ask.

where in NC? i live in western NC, and in the county im in the animal shelter here will only wait a freaking week. if the dog has to be quarintined (i don't know how to spell that, sorry), then a month and a week...unless they've changed their ways now..

ADD: call your local animal shelter, or wherever the dog went after it was picked up, and ask them what you are asking us. Asking the source is better.

Depends on how crowded the shelter is and how adoptable the dog is deemed to be - it's a county by county thing, some shelters make more of an effort than others to get dogs adopted, others just don't have the facilities or manpower.
The usual is 5 days to see if the owner comes for the dog if the dog was picked up running lose.

If the dog is an owner turn it, depends on how adoptable - they cannot adopt out dogs that are deemed "biters", so they can be destroyed right off. Some shelters will not adopt out pit breeds of any kind.

Same situation all over the country - horrible.
