in pitman's the halving to add t/d is cancelled if a st(er) loop is attached?

i have gazed perplexedly for hours at the words, 'stand(ard), starting, where the first half of the 'n' in stand has been halved and thickened to add following 'd' and the 'st' loop should then emcompass all of the half stroke, but the second half of the stroke is still written.
the examples make this clear but neither of the books i have read have spelt this out - very sloppy.
