If the current is coming towards you the equation is 12mph - 4.5mph= 7.5mph.
But if you are going with the current the equation is 12mph plus 4.5mph = 16.5mph

then how fast is the boat? How Fast Is The boat Going? Write an addition expression
 
If it's going with the current, 16.5 mph.
If it's going against the current, 7.5 mph.
