In The Pacific, why does Leckie call Sideny "Johnny Reb" in Part 1?

after they land on Guadalcanal, Leckie is eating an orange and says to Sidney "hey johnny reb" as he hands him half of it. why does he call him Johnny Reb?

i was in Borders and saw a book called Johnny Reb and it was about a confederate soldier during the Civil War. is he referring to him? if so why. and if not, then what did he meen?
