In the song "Hands Open" by Snow Patrol, what is making that screaming/screeching

In the song "Hands Open" by Snow Patrol, what is making that screaming/screeching

noise in the background? Halfway through the song you can start hearing this weird squealing. It almost sounds like a whale call or something. Did they mean to put that in there?
 
I've been wondering this for quite some time and have found it a bit odd I've never found another person wondering the same.
