The Institute of Medicine honored members David R. Challoner and Nancy E. Adler for their outstanding service to the institution. At IOM's 40th annual meeting, Challoner received the Walsh McDermott Medal, awarded to an IOM member for distinguished service over an extended period. Beginning as an IOM visiting scholar in 1973, Challoner has had a long and productive relationship with IOM and the National Research Council.
