Interesting historical topics to write about? Between 1400's and 1877.?

I'm a college student that needs to write a 7-9 page history paper. The time period needs to be between 1400's to 1877. I'm looking to do a paper on an interesting topic. I thought about the Salem witch trials, but that seems like a typical subject to write about. If you have any good research resources, besides Wikipedia, I'd very much appreciate it. Thanks for all your input and suggestions!

You don't say whether this is limited to American History or not. Here are a few ideas:

Native Americans after the Civil War
Manifest Destiny
Technological advances from the Civil War

World History
Bismarck and German Unification
Opium Wars (China)
Convict ships to Australia

Witch trials didn't only happen in Salem. They started in Europe. Maybe write about the Spanish Inquisition, where anyone who wouldn't convert to Catholicism was tortured and/or killed. Anyone suspected of being a witch then got special tortures and tests. Write about those. Or about the fate of Jews during that time.

Or write about alchemy.

How about voodoo in Caribbean slave cultures?
