Interesting topics to talk about with someone I've never talked to before?

I used to go to this small Math workshop place with this guy during grade school. But we've never talked. I would always see him, but I never got the chance to talk to him because he was always with his friends and I was always with mine.

Now we're in high school, and I see him more often (school fairs and parties). I'd really like to be his friend. But I don't know what to say or talk about! We go to separate schools, so I can't ask him about homework or simple stuff like that..

Yes, he knows I exist, but we have had 0 conversation time. Any tips? I'm planning to talk to him next month, during our school's fair. What can I say to him? Interesting topics of conversation? And how can I start the conversation? HELP! :(
 
Point out that you were in the same workshop, and then either discuss the workshop, or ask him about other interests he has. Try to think quickly and be spontaneous.
 
Why wait for a month, you kids can track down the most wanted if you cared to, find him on FB or get his phone number then talk to him about the up coming fair. !st remind him how you two use to go to the same Math workshop, then go on to the fair.

Start by talking about the fair itself; ie. the exhibits etc. Also, ask what kinds of activities that his school has , perhaps the conversation will lead to you attending his school functions with him.
