Internet Explorer just locks up?

I am using XP with bt broadband. I cannot get online because it locks on I/E . I have to re-start to use non broadband programs...advise please
 
goto control panel, Internet options, hit the (programs) tab at top. hit "reset settings". than hit (advanced) and "restore defaults"

if that don't work. download Firefox. its much better anyway.
 
delete all the internet temp files and cookies and run a repair over internet explorer so everything it put back to its defaults
 
Check your Antivirus, Do a scan, if that fails to work download Firefox coz its better than IE will ever be
 
Set up IE7 so it runs efficiently.

Over time IE7 seems to set its own (or programs do) tick boxes in the advance tab.
In IE7 Tools >Internet Options >Advance Tab
Click Restore advance settings defaults button.
Then scroll the listings down to near the bottom and:
1. Tick empty temp files when browser closes (this empties the cache, which if not empty, will stop you from going online).
2. Bullet disable phishing filter (optional. Leave it on if you want that type of protection, usually for financial data like internet banking)
Delete Browser History, cookies, add ons, the whole lot regularly.
Close the browser to set the settings.
 
First of all check for virus or spyware then try re-setting IE7 as under. Good Luck :)
