Someone walks across a certain hallway in the house. This happens every time someone crosses the upstairs hallway in my house. My modem was located downstairs before, so I moved it to my upstairs computer but nothing has changed. It shuts off all internet, not just my wireless.

Anyone have any ideas as to why this happens? I've changed two modems in the past couple years because of this but nothing has changed.
My service provider is Bellsouth and I have DSL.

Best guess: Someone ran a phone wire under the carpet in that hallway. The wire is probably very beat up from having been walked over for years, and every time someone steps on it it shorts out and causes your DSL modem to reset. Good luck finding it without ripping up all the carpeting.

Is the power staying on at the modems and routers?
If not, it could be an electrical wire running though the hallway which is shorting out as someone steps through.

A simply 3 light plug in meter and a friend to watch that outlet as you walk the hallway will be a good test. If this is the case, have an electrician come in ASAP as shorts in wires are a #1 cause in electrical fires.

A CAT5 cable could also be run under the floor which linked some outlets for the network. I don't think this is very likely but it's possible...
