iPad or Laptop? which is better for a student?

Okay, so my aunt is planning to buy me an iPad. But my mom said that maybe I should get a laptop instead. She said that iPad MIGHT not satisfy my needs for I am also going to use it for college. My course (if this helps) will be architecture and I'm pretty sure I'll be needing some programs and such.

For iPad, it's very light and I can carry it just around. I think it's really fun. Though, it may not be useful to me at all for college :| That's why im considering a laptop, instead. But im not really sure of it's features.

Anyway, what I'm asking is, which of the two will be better for me? Here are the things I'll probably use it for:
-school research and writing thesis and stuff
-reading
-playing sims
-gaming
-net surfing
-watching movies

your opinions and suggestions are highly appreciated :)

I really like the features of ipad, and I like that it's handy.
 
Well it depends on your personal preference. I would suggest trying out an iPad in an Apple Store so you can get your own feel for it (some people prefer physical keyboards). And don't you need a computer to sync the iPad with anyways? My suggestion is to get a small laptop and maybe an iPod touch or something like that.

Basicly, you just explained a laptop.
However your going to need like a 1,200 dollar laptop if your going to be gaming.
