iPhone (3.1.3) data disabled (changed APN) can I update to 4.2?

I just acquired a 3G iPhone from a friend who got the new one. I don't have a data plan so I disabled data through iPhonenodata.com. This changes the APN to disable 3G data. The phone currently has the 3.1.3 software but the newest version is 4.2. If I was to update to 4.2, would the no data thing still work or would there be another way I could do it?
