iphone 4 is it possible to change to ringtones and texts tones of YOUR choice?

I have just got the iphone 4 and only seem to be able to have the tones that are already preloaded in the phone. Is this standard with this phone or can I change it to tunes that I have downloaded?
This is my first iphone so abit lost!
I know how to change the tones on the phone its actually setting to tones that I have downloaded that I was wondering.

yes you can set a custom ringtone but it takes a little work follow this carefully and you should be good to go:

you cannot change your text or email tones at all, that's apples will and you have to live with it it's not open like the other mobile platforms
