Iphone sending text messages in MMS format!?

my iphone 4 is sending some recipients text messages in MMS format. Basically, when I send an ordinary text, they receive it as a message that looks as if a picture should be attached to it.

Even when I end the conversation the problem persists. Does anyone know why this is happening, and if so, how to stop it?
