Ipod touch 2G+Mic iOS 4.1 help?

I have an iTouch 2G with iOS 4.1 and my microphone/earphones do not work because it is not recognized by the iPod, whenever I try to open shazam or voice notes it said please inserrt microhpone. They are apple earphones and I need them to start working ASAP
any help will be appreciated, 10 points to best answer.
