Is a modem required for accessing internet on a second desktop?

My family has decided to buy a new computer from Dell, so I started to customize one on the Dell website. Then I got to the modem selection. The default is "none", so I was thrown off a bit. Is it neccesary to buy another modem for our newer desktop (We are keeping the old one)? My dad suggested splitting the wire, but I'm guessing this would halve the internet connection on both computers.

The choices of modems on Dell were earthlink and netzero. We have comcast, so I doubt we would want to pay for those.
