Is coasting in gear bad if you can still control the vehicle?

I recently passed my pratical driving test. I prefer to coast in gear if I need to stop after some time. (like when approaching a traffic light). My instructor says the correct way is to use breaks and disengage the clutch when stopping. I downshift to 2 or 3rd gear depending on my current speed while coasting but don't release the clutch peddle. So if I had to suddenly move fast I can do that. Is there anything wrong with this method?
