Is divx legitimate and what is it?

I like to watch movies online, but lately I've been running into problems with websites that require divx players. What is divx and is it legitimate? Does it take up a lot of space on a laptop computer, and is it worth it to download? I don't want to load up the computer with viruses or unnecessary programs, so I want to be sure that it will be worth it to download.

divx is a video codec. it is perfectly legit, just make sure the site u download the divx player is legit. In other words its the encoding of the video file.

Divx is legitimate but always choose a custom installation as it will install things like the google toolbar to your browser if you don't. On a side note, VLC is a much better video player and can play any type of file.
