I downloaded one earlier today (thinking it was just like any other download) and told my friends the game .iso that i got from it. He told me that it's illegal and he did it somewhat recently and the FBI showed up at his house and he got a $3,000 fine. Is this true? Am I going to get into trouble? Is there something I can do (e.g. change my ip address) to avoid this?

Thanks

It is illegal but your friend lying, the most you'll get is a call from your internet provider giving you a warning and even then if you continue to do it nothing will happen besides annoying phone calls from your internet provider saying you've downloaded blah blah.

It all depends on what you are torrenting. If its anything you would have to pay for, yes its illegal (the company/band/etc.) do not get money for you consuming the product, and yeah that stuff can happen. Besides I'd rather pay for something because I at least know I worked hard to get it than not working at all for it (and not supporting the company)

I've downloaded music torrents for years and the only time I got sent anything was a warning I got for downloading a Movie that was out in theaters...I think they go after that more and Games also. It is illegal but i've never got in trouble for it.

Well your not going to be able to change your ip address but i will tell you that what you did is veryy illeagle and you sure can get fined for that much

Your friend is probably exaggerating. The FBI has many more important things to do.
The rule of thumb is that if you would otherwise have to pay, the download is illegal.
Changing your IP won't help, but the chance of getting caught or fined is minimal.
