is it appropriate to introduce, or to refer to someone by their gender?

I have always been taught that it is correct to introduce a person by their full name and refer to them in the third person by their proper first and/or last name.

Over the course of that same lifetime I have had it drummed into me that sexuality has no place in polite society and especially in the past twenty years when sexual harassment has been made such an issue.

and so to the following question:

What should I do if a transsexual person asks me to refer to them as a specific gender?

I answered :

you need only refer to any person by their name and thats all

nobody has the right to tell you to be their sexual liason.

i dont introduce people as "my male friend"

and i got this comment back from British Mr Dot. this person is supposedly a "TOP CONTRIBUTOR" :

You're a ******* idiot.

What a farce this forum is!!!
there is no suggestion of this person referring to the other as IT or he/she or anything as vulgar as that. it was a simple means of allowing this person to feel more comfortable while not offending anyone.

surely anyone who can be offended by their own name needs psychiatric help, gender notwithstanding
