Is it more reliable to not fill up a DVD all the way?

For instance, if you are recording data should one completely fill a dvd-/+r or leave a little "breathing room"?

For example, should one completely fill a dvd up to its 4.7 limit or perhaps should one stop at 4.2 or whatever to avoid encoding all the way to the rim where it is more likely that fingerprints or whatever can get to it and smudge it more easily.

Does the burning software detect bad bits or whatever on a burnable dvd and "skip" them? That would certainly call for not filling a dvd to the brim, so to speak.
