Is it offensive to call an Afircan American friend "tar baby"?

I have a good buddy whose Afircan American, and today i was picking around and called him a tar baby, and then he looked really mad, would this make an Afircan American who has been your good friend for years mad at you?
 
that is very offensive and totally uncalled for. I think he probably is more hurt than mad.You need to apologize to him.
 
You just got back from living solo on a deserted island....obviously since you were born?
yeah, that was bad taste. Might just as well have called him the "n" word....genius
