Is it possible to bring shows and movies from my DirecTV DVR to my Computer...

...without video recording software? I have looked up online "Is it possible to take shows from a DVR and put it on my computer" and I usually get the same answer. Hook it up with an RCA cable and record the shows with video capturing software. I was wondering if there is any other way or I'm missing something.
