My friends wanted me to try but I said no, but my friend said that its less dangerous than alcohol and tobacco, is that true and if it is why is it illegal when they are not?

Contrary to popular opinion (among pot smokers, primarily) smoking pot every day over a number of years will make one lethargic, dull, unmotivated and generally stupid. This is not based on any empirical evidence, only on my observations of people I know personally who have smoked pot every day over a number of years.
Any benefits are, to me, beside the point.

Pot is virtually harmless (so long as it isn't laced with anything). It has never been proven to cause any health problems, it doesn't even give people a hang over, and is not chemically addictive. It is illegal because there was a time when it began to be a replacement for many things previously made from lumber, the lumber companies were losing money and, as sleazy as this is, they payed off politicians to make it illegal and start anti-cannibis campaigns. Now days other industries are hard at work keeping it illegal (i.e. beer companies, paper companies, and any one else who would be negatively affected were it legalized) and taboo. In some states, however, it is legal to be used medicinally to help with insomnia, anxiety, etc. And in some places it is perfectly legal to use it recreationaly, Sweden, for instance. Their crime rates actually went down after it was legalized. In other words, pot really isn't bad for you, so long as you are responsible. It is only illegal because of greedy corporations.

Alcohol and tobacco are definitely more dangerous than marijuana.
Tobacco gives you cancer, and alcohol harms your brain and makes you dangerous behind the wheel, etc.
Marijuana is illegal because people don't understand its benefits and consider it to be physically addictive (it can be mentally addictive, like cracking your knuckles).
Historically, marijuana had gotten a pretty bad rap. It is associated with undesirable lifestyles (hippies for example), and oppressed ethnic groups.
Also, when hemp was being grown for fuel and textiles, tobacco farmers claimed that the number of people smoking it was threatening their business, and the Marijuana Tax Stamp Act of 1937 was the first to outlaw marijuana. At the time, opium and cocaine were also being recognized as harmful, so anti-marijuana advocates threw marijuana on that wagon and preached that it made people crazy and would destroy American values, etc.
All marijuana does it make people happy, give people the munchies, and make the music of the 1960s better to listen to.
Don't smoke it if you don't want to, but it's better for you than smoking cigarettes and drinking whiskey. Good luck!
