This might be a weird question but I just found myself kinda annoyed by this.
I have a friend, let's call her Maria. I wouldn't consider Maria a very close friend. We do keep in touch regularly, get together, talk and hang out. I've only known her for about a year or so, and we didn't start actually hanging out until last spring. But yes, she's by no means my 'BFF' and I don't feel like we connect all that well.
Anyways, just now Maria texted me and told me she is coming back to town tomorrow evening and she wants me to come meet up with her at the bus station and help her carry her bags home. I don't have a car or anything, so it would mean I would have to walk to the bus station, and then walk with her all the way to her home, which is at least a 20 minute walk, carrying her heavy bags. Which is really not an enjoyable thing to do on a winter evening (yes, it's still winter here and very much so).
It's not that I wouldn't help out a friend, it's just that this is the 3rd time in a pretty short period of time that she has asked me to do this and I can't help feeling that it's a bit rude. I mean, if it happened once in a blue moon, I wouldn't think too much of it. But it seems like she is making a habit out of this.
And I quite frankly think she's an idiot to have packed that much stuff when she's only been out of town for about 2 weeks, to stay with her parents. I can't imagine how she could have packed so many things that it is actually physically impossible for her to carry her bags on her own. Is it necessary to bring your entire wardrobe + all your belongings? I myself travel back and forth between where I live and my hometown, for even longer periods of time, and I never bring more than one suit case and one back-up and have no trouble carrying them on my own. My rule of thumb is to never pack more than I can carry myself.
I feel like she's being a bit rude in asking this of me because by doing it she puts me in the position where I come off as selfish and lazy if I tell her I don't want to do it. The only resort would be to lie and say I CAN'T because I have other plans and I don't like to lie.
So what do you people think? Is she rude? Or am I just a bad friend?
Just wanted to know whether or not I'm overreacting. Also, I needed to vent.
