I have a 50" Panasonic Viera Plasma (1366x768) it is a HD Panel, but not Full HD.
I am wondering, if I purchase a Blu-ray player...am I going to be satisfied with the picture. Would I see a difference in picture quality if sitting almost 4m (13ft) away.I do know how Blu-ray players works, but in the short term...will I get a better picture quality with Blu-ray now, rather than my normal DVD/Harddrive player?

get a ps3, you can try and get the benefit of a whole new gaming community. bluray will uprate to your tvs picture ability so i would guess it may be worth it , although i wouldnt bother spending a fortune.

Your Plasma TV is 720p, this is still a High Definition TV. Now, if you purchase a blu-ray player, you will still see some benefit, as the picture will still be better than a standard DVD, though not to it's full potential.Your TV will just not do Blu-ray jsutice. If I were you I would concider waiting until you have a 1080p TV. By the time you upgrade your TV, blu-ray players are probably going to be a lot cheaper in price. They're still considerably high. Also, during this holiday season, you might find some great deals on them as well.
