Is longer or shorter hair easier to style?

I have hair that comes a little bit below my bellybutton. Whenever I try to put my hair in a pony tail, do braids, half up half down, my hair doesn't cooperate very well. My friends who have about top rib bone length hair can do all kinds of styles with their hair without getting weird bumps in their hair. If I cut my hair shorter would it be easier to style?
The only things I can do without a problem are curling and straightening but it takes a long time since my hair is so long
 
Yes, it would. I've had hair down to the tops of my thighs and hair that barely came past my chin. It's much easier to style when it's short.
