Is my black really a lab?

I got Duff from a girl I went to school with. She actually found him but later found out he'd wandered away from the litter and asked the original owner his breed and she said black lab. What throws me off is the way his ears lay and the little white patch on his chest. I HAVE done my research and found out the AKC recognizes black labs with a white patch but it's not desirable. It's not that a really care if he's full blooded or a mix because he's getting neutered next month anyways, I'm just curious. Thanks ahead of time for your mature answers.
