Is my lip infected or is it something else?

Two nights ago I was holding my nephew and he bucked back and his head hit my face..it didn't really hurt or bleed so I didn't think anything of it. The next morning when I woke up my bottom lip on the left side was swollen,chapped and looked busted. I put ice on it but it really didn't help. My mom told me to put medicated lip ointment on it and I have but it burns so bad when I do it. Yesterday when I got up it looked like there was yellow crust over the part of my lip that was swollen and cut but my mom said she thinks its just the dead skin? It fell off today when I was in the shower and the part of my lip it was on was like raw and red and it burns and throbs and it is still swollen. I keep on putting the medicated lip ointment on it and it does give some temporary relief...but my question is: is the yellow stuff am infection? what are some of the symptoms of having an infection of the lip? I've tried to find photos of infected cuts on the lip but I can't find any. I also read that my lip could be swollen because of an infected tooth? Could it be from something other than my nephew hitting me since it didn't really hurt or bleed?
