Is my roommate responsible for the internet bill?

I have a roommate who is moving out on March 2nd. I pay the internet bill one month in advance and she gives me money later. I paid for the new period (Feb. 22- March 21) already about 2 weeks ago. About one week after I made a payment, she told me that she would move out on March 2nd. Technically she used the internet for about one week. She found a someone who takes over her room.

Should I:

1. ask my roommate to pay for the half ($40/2),
2. ask my roommate to pay for the days she used,
3. ask the new roommate to pay the rest (for 3 weeks), or
4. just give up if the new roommate does not use the internet

Several important points are:

*When I made a payment, I did not know that she would move out
*She agreed that I pay the bill and she gives me money later
*We have to pay the bill one month in advance

She is saying that she does not need to pay whole amount (her portion) because she used the internet only for one week.

Please help!
 
Ask your roomate to pay half. You had an oral contract to split the internet bill, and even though your room mate doesn't get to use it, she would have to pay because her liability should not be given to you. This is a basic law principle.

Well, I would ASK for the half simply because you pre-paid for the both of you before she said she was moving.
 
Your roommate should pay a PRO RATED amount. 10 days to be exact. Take the total bill and divided by the number of days from Feb 22 to March 21=29 days. and multiply by 10 days...That is what your roommated should pay you.

THIS IS THE MAIN REASON WHY YOU SHOULD ASK FOR A DEPOSIT EVERYTIME SOMEONE MOVES IN WITH YOU. TO AVOID ANY PROBLEMS IF THEY MOVE OUT WITHOUT NOTICED.
 
i would ask that the rromate pay for the time that she used it and ask the new roomate to pay for the rest. if the new roomate doesnt agree to pay i think she should be responsible for the amount that she agreed to pay per month
 
You can only really ask her for one week. Try to make a better arrangement with your new roommate because you don't want to be the only one responsible for paying.
