Last year I bought a 2001 Passat GLX 4motion wagon (B5). Today during normal servicing the mechanic said it's leaking oil. I saw the leak for the first time today in the rear passenger side of the engine and also in the front driver side corner. Estimate for repair: $1688 to repair both valve covers and cam seals as well as a timing belt change (mileage @ 75500 so it's due). If separate, the costs are: timing belt-$1312.50 Valve Cover Gaskets & Cam Adjuster Seals-$1015.The rest of the car is good. I'm in the navy and deploy soon so money is tight. I told the dealership I don't know about cars and worry they've taken advantage of that. Online stores have these parts for $50- $75, and I understand labor costs. I wish my hours were valued as much. So is this estimate legit?
