Is non-domestic travel common for software/UX engineers?

I'm currently a Silicon Valley girl studying Computer Science but I also want to experience South American, German, Chinese, and Japanese cultures. I would love to live ~1 year in each country and learn each language. But being from the SV, I feel like Software/UX Engineers tend to stay at their office rather than travel. Does anyone know if it's common (or possible) to be able to travel that much AND also stay in this profession?
