When I was growing up, my feet would always be cold when I slept, so I always wore socks. My mom always warned my that my feet needed to "breathe".

I've been doing this for two decades and my feet are perfectly healthy - no fungus or discolored toenails or anything, and I think my mom's wisdom was just some urban legend or wives' tale or something.

Also, if I'm wrong about this:

If it really is important for feet to breathe (I would assume they get oxygen from blood like everything else) what about other body parts? Women are notorious for sleeping in pyjamas and night gowns, and most people sleep in bed sheets and covers. Surely the rest of the body has the same mysterious rules for "breathing"? Why are they not affected by clothing?

It is an old wives tail in all honesty. As long as the socks are clean, there is no problem in wearing them at night.
