I play tennis competitively and my coach and I discuss current news about the pros and such. He has been telling me that Federer's career is done and that he will never be number 1 in the world ever again. I think I might start believing it seeing him lose to Novak in the Dubai tournament in straight sets. Tell me what you think.

He is still doing incredible. I think your coach is trying to act like a know it all.

he might not be totally done.. but one thing that is probably for sure.. he is not going to rise to the heights that he was at during 2006- 2008.. just not going to happen.. for one thing hes older... secondly other players are getting better....

and he is a family guy now.. his status is single.. he cannot have his full mind and body in tennis... and while he can be a solid 2-3 ranking..., i dont think he will be totally content and want to play a grinding tour schedule to keep it..

he very well could be done... nothing is forever....
i think tennis is in for some big dramatic changes... Justine henin is out... serena willams might retire.. venus is on limited time.... i think its coming

If you were #2 out about 1,750 professional tennis players ranked by the ATP World Tour, would you retire?

You're right about the #1 ranking, IMHO. It may be that he doesn't win a grand slam this year, but he seems to like playing, and he still goes deep almost every time he's entered. Why hang it up? He said he wants to play long enough for his children to see him play.

Gonzales and Rosewall played until they were about 40! Laver lasted well into his 30's.

give the guy a break.. he's getting old, Novak and Nadal are at their peeks of their youth, they could run for 5 hours and not get tired
Federer is about turn 30 he's already had that peek
Federer isn't really done it's just that the other players have stepped up their game.
he's playing against a younger generation which is a disadvantage and has been a pattern for quite a while.
Federer isnt done I think he's reaching 20 grand slams, with wimbledon and the us open and MAYBE french open.
