Is Roger Goodell screwed either way on the Brett Favre case?

If things turn out to warrant a suspension, it seems Roger Goodell will be screwed no matter what he does. If he suspends Brett Favre, there's going to be all the Favre cronies out for blood becuase Goodell ended "the Streak." John Madden might even put a hit out on Goodell. On top of that, some people are saying Favre doesn't even finish the season if he gets suspended and just retires. So that will anger a great deal of people.

If Goodell doesn't suspend Favre, it will look like he's showing favoritism to the "Golden Child(Grandfather)." There will be thousands of fans who blast him for that.

So how will this affect Goodell in the short/long run?

What is the best thing he can do to not alienate fans in a time where many fans are already troubled by the state of the NFL? (I.e. fans already angry about a potential lockout, player holdouts, high ticket prices, and blackouts etc.)
@devilish

I think you're correct, but do you really think people have that much sense? You know how fandom changes the way people feel and there are few people who can think logically about things.

I don't think so. First they just have to investigate what really happened and make their decisions accordingly. If his actions merit a suspension, then suspend him. If they don't, then don't suspend him. It was Brett Favre's stupid actions that could possibly end his streak. It wasn't like Gooddell forced him to send those pictures. As long as his decision is fair compared to what he did, I think Gooddell will be fine. I'd treat Favre the way I'd treat any other player in the NFL. Treat them all equal no matter how big of a name they have.

Why you saying that?
What so special about this foolish player who just cannot make solid decision?
His talent was good but his thinking brain is just like my toddler.
I don't see anything that worth to bring his name up.

If we know anything about Goodell it's that he doesn't shy away from punishing superstars if he he believes that they tarnished the well polished image of the NFL
Favre will get suspended the minute that Goodell comes up with enough evidence to justify it .
If Favre gets suspended this week it will actually be a blessing for him because it will allow time for his tendonitis to resolve itself
