Is rooting an android phone safe?

I have a droid x and want to root it.i rememberexperiencing problems on my ipod touch after jailbteaking.is this the same thing? Also I want to over clock the processor (up to around 1.25 ghz.is that bad for the phone in any way ? And I know my warranty will be voided but if o return the phone to factory settings will ny warranty be valid even after rooting?

Custom firmware on the PSP, jailbreaking on the iPhone, and now rooting on Android? Why do people keep coming up with different terms for the same thing? It's called hacking, people, whether you think the term is taboo or not.

Anyway, it's simple: usually these kinds of tools come with a fool-proof warning about voiding the warranty and breaking (or 'bricking', another redundant term) your device and stuff like that, but that's just to scare away the noobs that won't necessarily break the device but have a higher chance of doing so. It's just a way of showing mercy to the less technically inclined. If you have at least half a clue then you'll be fine.
