Is smoking helping or hurting my singing voice?

I sing very often and am looking into musical theatre school and a career that involves singing and music. I am 18 right now and smoke about half a pack a day. I quit off and on for about a week at a time and when i do quit i find my voice is alot worse, it does not sound as rich, smoking really relaxes my voice and i cannot hit the notes i normally can when i do not smoke. I know the health risks and that in the long run it will probably hurt my voice but i feel i should continue to smoke so when i do sing (even if it is just at home) i can always sound good. I want to always sound good so i can keep progressing with my singing and becoming more confident in my voice. Any advice or knowlege on this?
