is the audience suposed to like the antagonist or protagonist?

i have always favored the antagonist
- t-bag form prison break
- james form twilight (bestie made me see it D= lol )

even when i was little i LOVED scar form lion king .

does a writer etc attempt to have the audience go for the protagonist ???
 
The audience is supposed to be entertained. That's the bottom line.
To get there, you should have a protagonist the audience will care about, even if they don't like the protagonist. They have to care.
There is nothing wrong with an antagonist that is likable. I always liked The Master in Doctor Who. But the antagonist must be understandable; your audience must find the bad guy believable, and that usually means having motives which we can all relate to.
