...catalogue (the one with no...? ...straps) proven to be safe?
The seat I refer to is the BMW branded Stage II ISOFIX seat for children 9kg+. There are no straps at all, just a thick padded bar which goes across the child's lap/stomach.
On one hand I can't believe that BMW would do away with retaining straps without extensive and conclusive research. On the other hand if it is safer, then why do dedicated car seat manufacturers not also offer similarly designed products.
