Is the IPhone connectivity the same as the ITouch connectivity?

All my friends are able to acces the internet anywhere with their ITouch. Do IPhones work the same way, or do you have to use the AT&T data plan?
 
No because Ipod touch's use wifi only, while the Iphones can use something called EDGE im not sure entirely, but i think it goes through your normal cell phone signal, but the Iphones are also wifi compatible
