Some guidance here, is the Cherokee (midsize ZJ or WJ) a good used buy 10-15 years old? Is their any issues I should look out for? I need one for snow, ice, and towing other cars out of sticking situations. But also I need to a be comfortable, town driver. If this is not the car, then which would you recommend. Also what is the MPG on these usually?
I'm hesitant to buy a honda/toyota, actually to buy a decent one, they cost way too much. Resale value is so high, and I know everyone swears by them, but they are always so far out my price range, or are very old have high high milage or have issues. So please recommend something, that isn't priced sky high like a Toyota land cruiser or 4runner.

Yes, it's a great vehicle for what you want to use it for. In my opinion, I would go with the WJ, it's of course newer, nicer and I think more comfortable, if you want a good long lasting engine get the 4.0 6 cylinder, it's also great town driver, now, if you going to tow a lot then get the 4.7, you would want a V8 when you tow. Both engines are great it all depends on what you need. For winter use, don't worry about the 4wd system, it's a Jeep. I used to have a 4.0 Cherokee and I would get about 17 mpg, really it's not that bad for an SUV. Look for a good maintain not abused Jeep and it would last a long time.

I'd highly recommend you don't buy a jeep. My uncle bought a 3 Year old Grand Cherokee, it broke down around twice a month, and I'm not exaggerating. If you want a dependable SUV, buy something made by Honda, or Toyota.

Have a '98 Grand Cherokee with umpteen thousands miles on her, & love it. Sure, it's had some work done, had a tranny problem, & the exhaust manifold cracked & had to be replaced, but she's soldiered on thru northern Ohio snow for over ten years. My daughter has had it for awhile, to make sure my new grand baby gets safely home.

Truthfully, the Grand Cherokees are crap. If you want a reliable car, get an XJ Cherokee or Cherokee sport. They are extremely reliable, and quite cheap. They do not have some features like the grand Cherokees, but they are overall more reliable. The only downside is they are all 10+ years old now. They are known to run for 200,000+ miles, so if you get one with lower mileage, you can get a good use out of the car.
