Me and my roommate had a debate over why our dryer wasn't working and I claimed that it was due to the vent hose in the back not being hooked up. It was completely off the dryer. He claimed it has nothing to do with it and said it was just busted. I'm pretty sure I'm right but could anyone explain why?

The vent hose is to direct the hot air and condensation away from the room the dryer is situated in.

It may well be that the hose becoming disconnected has either damaged something, or that there is a microswitch that shuts the machine down.

nah the vent hose is just there for kicks

yeah right. yes it is very important it directs the excess heat and humidity out of the room.
but first ... is the dryer getting hot. if no then replace the heating element.

the hose being disconnected probably won't slow the drying too much, provided it,s not kinked laying on the floor.but it will raise the temp in your house and can cause your windows and doors to stick pull the dryer out and ensure good hot airflow.
a bigger problem is a connected hose and a clogged vent

so if the dryer gets hot you might be right

the vent hose has too be hoked up too get rid of the lint dust dirt that is filtered threw the hose and blows it outside. your eventually gonna get sick Of the lint dust flying around the house.
