We know we have to have a wall vent because we have a gas fire,

but it faces due East and the wind blows straight through with nothing to deflect it.

I was wondering if we could have a cowl fitted so the room is still vented but the wind coming through isn't so direct?

I've seen some that look like they'd do the trick, but say not for gas appliances.

Type "gas appliance vent cowl" to see if you can find more sites. There seemed to be a few in the UK. Also call a heating contractor or fireplace store to check with them.

When our gas fire was fitted the vent had a square thing with fins fitted to the outside on the wall, so that defuses the wind, although when it rains, it sounds quite loud!
Look at the website of the fire manufacturer, and see if they sell one specifically for your fire, or ask the question in one of the diy websites.
Good luck!
