I think I may have come across one, however cruel and despicable. To emphasize the point, let me just shorthand a particular phenomenon that seems to be the center of it all.
You’ve heard the argument for pornography that it helps to curb the yearnings of strange men from prowling the streets at night, right? As unlikely as the reasoning may be, what if this is actually true? What if, without porn, men would become so enflamed with lust that they’re willing to pounce on any female that happens to walk by?
I don’t have a name for this occurrence, but what if this actual is a common affliction that many of us suffer, particularly those who are slaves to their urgings and emotions? Think about it: money, food, patriotism, game and talent shows, etc. What if all of these things are products of people’s irrational need to fill holes they perceive to overwhelm their lives? That, if they didn’t have this thing in their lives, then they would spend much of their time, money and energy on doing things that are even more destructive and detrimental to themselves and others around them than their current actions. Kind of like choosing the lesser of the two evils.
In this case, let’s say that some people follow a religion because it is the only way to keep them in check. Without it, some people would feel permitted to commit all sorts of vile acts, large and small. So, according to those same people in their limited view of the world, we need religion to stop us from doing what we would “normally” do and, because nonreligious people do not carry the same belief, we would have “free reign” to do as we please. Of course, this goes a long way to explaining some of the things that they do and say. All this, despite the evidence that the less religious a segment of society is, the less violent and social disruptive it is.
Well, what do you think? Am I way off base here? And what name should we give this phenomenon of needing to rely upon crutches throughout life?
