I have an 8 month old German Shepherd; every time I come home he whines because he's so happy to see me, and I praise him and smother him because I love him so much. After a few seconds he eventually calms down. Recently I've been wondering if this is the wrong way to greet your dog, because after watching some episodes of the Dog Whisperer, I've noticed that Cesar never, ever greets the dog he will be working with; he practically ignores it completely. Sometimes I get the feeling that my shepherd thinks he is the king of the castle. Is there a proper way to greet your dog? Should my family and I tone down on the smothering?

Yes, yes yes! Ignore him until you've been home about ten minutes, after that you may pet him and love on him or go outside with him and toss a ball around. I completely understand that you want to show your little guy how much you love him, and how much you've missed him while you were gone, but in the long run you'll end up regretting doing it this way :-D

I watch that too.. I follow his method and ignore my dog at first when she comes in to jump on me. I wait until she has a calm energy, which is when she isn't jumping or whining and is just wagging her tail while looking at me.

After a week of doing this, my dog doesn't jump on me when I enter. She's also better when I'm about to leash her for her walks.

Never let your dog jump on you. It shows that you are not the alpha. That's all I know.

I would tone it down a little but I dont think that the dog whisperer is 100% true....I believe that a dog will get their personallities from their owners and if you dont pay attention to them they become touch me nots....but it is important to treat him or her like they belong in the family think of it as your child....your son or daughter gets excited when you get home from work, well the same goes for your dog...my dog for instance hugs me when I come through the door but then he goes and does his own thing....but good luck with your shepherd they seem to need a little more attention than most dogs.
