Is there any way of knowing whether you are having a dream or premonition?

I recently had this dream and I remembered it with vivid detail and then the next day almost the same exact thing happened that I dreamed about.The next night I had a very detailed, realistic dream and I don't know if it was just a dream or a premonition since it is something that could take place years down the road, is there any real way of telling besides experiencing the event???

I'd say the only way you can be certain is once the actual event has taken place or once it has begun IF you can spot the signs that is. That's why you need to write these down straight away
I guess you have to experience a few of them to be able to distinguish them from dreams
Having said that look for things that are out of place in the dream to see if you can discount them
For instance I dreamt of a crash recently which involved me but I've just realised that the bus driver was on the left yet we drive on the left here so that seems out of place
And it's unlikley to happen abroad either as a hospital was mentioned and its name seems unique to this country
